This volume encapsulates the unique world of matchboxes that only they could create!
The world,
if you look closely,
is full of strange things.
MATCH OKUDA, or “Oku-chan,”
finds the things that catch his eye,
cuts them out through his own unique perspective,
and fits them into the tiny format of a matchbox.
Movies, music, art, scenes from the street.
His subjects are all over the place.
Some are classics.
But personally, I especially love the ones
that make you go,
“Wait—you picked THAT!?”
And it doesn’t end when the matchbox is made.
He takes the finished matchboxes
back to the places that inspired them,
holds them up against the original scenery,
or even in front of someone’s face to take a photo.
He finds something in the world,
edits it in his own way,
turns it into a physical object,
and sends it back out into the world again.
Watching what he does makes you realize
that interesting things aren’t hidden away
in some special place.
They’re right in front of us—
if you know how to find the interesting in them.
For him, the matchbox is
a tiny editing device,
and a window through which to see the world.
